COMPUTER CLASSES

After a year of delays and setbacks due to the covid epidemic we were granted an extension to finally hold our Seniors computer classes with Don Ricci and Laura Armistead instructing classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Besides these regularly scheduled classes they have also taken time to teach some one-on-one students on an appointment schedule. This has allowed seniors with specific problems such as vision and hearing to access training. Laura has completed her instruction time here and Don will continue with Tuesdays as well as Thursdays into September. We are so fortunate to have stepped into the world-wide web with them.

LIBRARY ONLINE

Also, thank you to Michael Dauber who came to our class to make sure we all have current library cards and information about how to sign out online books and audio books. By the end of the class each member had a book to listen to or read online. Next week we will learn how to get together on Zoom as well as how to remain safe online and while you shop online.

OUR OWN WEBSITE

Speaking of the web…we now have our own website, and if you haven’t yet seen It, you are missing out! Without a local paper we often don’t know what is going on around us. Our website has a calendar where we have started putting events that you may want to know about. We are starting with our depot activities and plan to begin entering other activities around town.  The site has contact information for local businesses and for contacts with information that seniors want to know, such as respite or senior housing. We have begun putting our newsletters on the website.

We are gathering ideas for events that seniors may be interested in taking part in. We would like to see it become a vital place for anyone over 55 to meet, socialize and add a spark to their lives. When classes end in September, we will have time slots freed up for other activities.

MEETINGS

A meeting was held on September 1. We have changed the dates for our regular monthly meetings. They will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. All other Wednesday mornings the depot will be opened by Carol Pratt for drop-in and coffee from 10 to 12. Make Wednesdays the time to meet a friend for coffee and a chat before you go for the mail.

ACTIVITIES

We had fun coming up with ideas for fall activities. One project taking place on November 3 at 1 p.m. will be making a Christmas centerpiece, hosted by Linda Budreau.  Decorations will be supplied with a small fee.  All members must preregister at the depot. Other suggestions were Book Club, Movie Night, Cookie exchange, Name that Tune, duties of an executor. There were also ideas that included preparing food to take home, which we realize will probably need to be put on the back burner because of covid regulations. These include lefse and perogy making. If you have a suggestion, please share it with us.

LIFE DURING COVID

All activities must adhere to regulations such as proper wearing of masks, vaccinations, hand sanitizing and social distancing. We are also responsible for sanitizing the tables, chairs, door knobs, etc. before using the room. Please don’t ask for exemption of Federal or Provincial rules.

As events are added we will also add them to the calendar on our website at https://rainyriverseniordepot.ca
